Wyrd (pronounced like the word “weird”)

is a concept in Anglo-Saxon culture roughly corresponding to fate or personal destiny. The word is ancestral to Modern English weird, whose meaning has drifted towards an adjectival use with a more general sense of "supernatural" or "uncanny", or simply "unexpected".

The cognate term to wyrd in Old Norse is urðr, with a similar meaning, but also personified as a deity: Urðr (anglicized as Urd), one of the Norns in Norse mythology. The word also appears in the name of the well where the Norns meet, Urðarbrunnr.

Wyrd Leatherworks and Meadery is a local business to the Portland area. Our goal is to provide quality, handmade leather goods and delicious home-brewed mead to our customers with 100% satisfaction.

Tayler Toll and Travis Sigler have been friends for over a decade. In November of 2017 the pair came up with the idea for a small leather and mead business. Travis had been doing leatherwork for a few years at that point and the two of them began their first batch of mead in Tayler’s closet in the summer of 2017.

By 2018, under the name Wyrd Leather And Mead, they opened their first location in Milwaukie, Oregon. The first year was a bit of a struggle to get the meadery launched, but in March they got their first commercial batch of semi-sweet traditional mead rolling.

In the early summer of 2020 during the height of a pandemic, they found a new perfect spot that would become the new headquarters for the now re-branded Wyrd Leatherworks and Meadery. For three months and with the help of amazing friends, they built-out their new location in Portland. This new location included a new hall space where people could come drink their mead by the glass and have small food items fitting their theme.

In 2022, Tayler left his position as co-owner to pursue new opportunities. Also in 2022 Wyrd brought on one of the co-founders and long-time collaborators of Wyrd, Anastasiya Rumega as General Manager and Events Coordinator. They also brought on Devon Olson as the Kitchen and additional Mead Production Manager.
